Dr. Levi Watkins Jr. was an African-American Physician-Scientist who implanted the first defibrillator into a patient in 1982. A graduate of Tennessee State University in 1962, he was the first African-American to enter Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, beginning his studies in 1966 and graduating with honors (AOA) in May, 1970.
Dr. Levi Watkins Jr. was an African-American Physician-Scientist who implanted the first defibrillator into a patient in 1982. A graduate of Tennessee State University in 1962, he was the first African-American to enter Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, beginning his studies in 1966 and graduating with honors (AOA) in May, 1970. He continued his surgery training at Johns Hopkins and conducted innovative research and innovative medical education for 35 years. Dr. Watkins passed on April 11, 2015.
George C. Hill, Ph.D. is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Vanderbilt School of Medicine. He is also the Levi Watkins Jr. M.D. Professor Emeritus in Medical Education. His field of study includes investigating approaches in medical education to achieve health equity.
Dr. Hill is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.
